Ugerløse Church

In the 1870’s, Ugerløse Church was owned by the Suhrske Foundation who decided to demolish the old Romanesque church, as it suffered a great deal of decay, caused by rapidly changing owners.

In its place, the Suhrske Foundation built a new church in Italian Romanesque round arch style designed by architect N.P.C. Holsøe. The church is built in red bricks, and has a tall and square tower with a cone-shaped spire. Two smaller towers with small spires flanks the big tower on each side. The nave continues to the choir, which ends with a round apse.

The cemetery is fenced by walls made of split fieldstone crowned by a cover of roof tiles. The west facing wall is made of brick.

The church holds 275 people at its peak.

The new church was inaugurated on the 26th of November, 1876. It was a very solemn day. The Rural Dean H. A. Ravn gave the inauguration speech after which the present priests read scriptures from the Bible, and the priest of the church, J. F. Engberg, preached the gospel of the day. To mark the celebration, the choir from the Church of our Lady in Copenhagen came to sing.

After the ceremony, the Board of the Suhrske Foundation laid down a shrine under the altar in which a document containing information on the church’s construction, etc. is kept.

On the 17th of January, 1918, the church became independent.

The Suhrske Foundation has donated several objects to the church:

Chandeliers

From the 1700’s: Two chandeliers of 8 scrolled arms with attached candle cups and bobeches. The arms are divided by ornaments, shaped like a harebell. The column ends in a large bottom ball on which is engraved: “Gave til Uggerløse Kirke af Direktør F. Suhr og Hustru 1883”. (Gift to Ugerløse Church from director F. Suhr and wife 1883). Under the bottom ball a grape cluster is found. Jupiter rides on his eagle above the column. The chandeliers hang in the choir of the church.

Additional chandelier: Engraved on the bottom ball: “Ugerløse Kirkes kroner ere skjenkede af Direktør F. Suhr og Hustru. 1886”. (The chandeliers in Ugerløse Church have been donated by director F. Suhr and wife). The baroque chandelier hangs in the church’s crossing, and is probably donated along with two smaller chandeliers – also in baroque style.

Two candelabras
From 1884, made from bronzed metal, 176 cm tall. Shaped like Corinthian columns. A brass chandelier with 8 arms as well as a centered candle tube on top is placed on each of them. The following is engraved on the ball: “Gave fra direktør F. Suhr og frue 1884”. (Present from Director F. Suhr and Mrs. 1884).

Bible
Frederik and Ida Suhr’s wedding Bible from 1869. Donated in 1893 as a testamentary gift.
